A couple years ago, we noticed a gap in our development process between players coming out of our Learn to Skate and Learn to Play programs and heading into our Mite travel program. We created the Silver Mite program to bridge the gap. Silver Mites is an introduction to hockey and continues with the USA Hockey recommended American Developmental Model (ADM). The ADM is a long-term development plan that builds the player's love of the game while at the same time developing their skills. We are able to keep costs down by having many players on the ice during practices. During practices, small groups work on skills with multiple coaches. Silver mites don't yet focus on positions, line combinations or specific plays. Rather, they focus on skill development and having fun. Silver mites practice twice during the week and play a half ice game on the weekend. Coaches are on the ice to help instruct players during games. We typically have four Silver Mite teams with limited rosters that practice together. Players receive a team jersey and coordinating socks.
We have three sessions of silver mites throughout the year. Player evaluations are usually the first week of September, the first week of January and the first week of April. Registration opens approximately two weeks before the start of each session. This is a Chicago Hawk program.
When purchasing new hockey equipment (if a transition to travel hockey is made) please note that the Chicago Hawks Travel Hockey Club has an equipment policy requiring red helmets and pants.
